How to use your Facebook addiction to improve reading and learning Habits?
January 12, 2017

( Estimated reading time: 3 min )

“Facebook can help you to improve your reading and learning habits”

It sounds too good to be true, but you may have been doing this without realising it all along. It allows you to practice and cultivate certain skills that will help improve your reading speed and comprehension, your writing and vocabulary. Social media sites like Facebook have many resources available to struggling students and those wishing to learn English alike. Take advantage of the learning opportunities available with a service you already use favourite and get the most out of your Facebook account.

(Important editor’s note: Please make sure to fact check the news/posts before sharing it on any social media platform. This will help social media platforms and other users to put a stop to fake news/posts.)

Speed Reading

Facebook is a post based media, and most of these posts involve at least a little text. Keeping up with your favorite friends and organisations can be time-consuming, so this is an excellent opportunity to learn how to speed read. Speed reading involves learning to read at a faster pace using tricks like scanning and skimming. Speed reading takes practice, so Facebook posts are an excellent opportunity to hone your speed reading skills.

Better Writing

Since there is no character limit to Facebook posts, you have a better opportunity to express yourself than with other social media platforms. This is an excellent opportunity to hone your writing skills, whether you’re practicing your English or improving your existing skills. Facebook also gives you the opportunity to get valuable feedback on your writing from many sources as well. This can prove invaluable as you grow as a writer.

Better Vocabulary

Facebook is a global platform, and as such it can connect you with people all over the world from all walks of life. It exposes you to differing ideas and philosophies, all of which have their own specific vernacular. Social media gives you the opportunity to learn all sorts of new things, especially words. Expand your curiosity about synonyms, antonyms, hyperbole and exposition, and watch your vocabulary grow.

Social Skills

If you consider yourself awkward and shy, Facebook is a great place to fake it until you make it. Your Facebook account provides the opportunity to put forward the face that you are a confident social person, even if you are not right now. Find people you genuinely connect with and find yourself coming out of your shell before you know it.

Skills Sites

Aside from being the place where you keep up to date with your social circle, Facebook affords more concrete learning opportunities as well. Pages like HowToStudy offer content like videos, pictures, tips and tricks to improve your learning and study habits. There are also things like private study groups or tutors on Facebook.

Free Content

The best thing about improving your reading and other learning habits with Facebook is that it’s all free of charge. If you find a service that requires payment, keep looking – you can most likely get what you want for free. This doesn’t mean you must sacrifice quality, either. There is a nearly endless amount of content designed for your needs, and you should take full advantage of it. It is true what they say, the best things in life are free.

Teenagers today have no idea what they have. Just go back 20+ years and try to find something about a subject – it would take you a LOT of time. You wouldn’t have access to the internet and would probably need to take a trip to the local library. Now, you can do it from home, in minutes.

Yeah, you’re right. We, as parents, need to remind them or show them how things were and why they should be so grateful for living now. Most of them don’t understand the huge changes we as humans have been through over the last 25 years.

Facebook is filled with a lot of cool pages and groups and if you do your research you can find something interesting on just about any subject. I think I spend 3-4 hours daily on FB because there is so much new stuff to discover and learn about.

The best things in life are free and it only took me 6 years to figure this out! Gosh! But, then again, better late than never, right? Right now, we can find information on any topic, we just need to take the time to look for it in the right places.

Facebook can be a powerful tool in the right hands. If you spend your time playing Candy Crush (no offense, I’m a fan myself but I play in moderation) then you won’t get a lot out of it. I try spending most of my Facebook time on pages that try to teach me something, that share things I’ve never heard about, that try to make the internet a better place.

Because there is so much free information online we just find it hard to focus on the right one. And it’s getting harder to figure out which one is the right one. This overwhelming level of data is hitting us daily and we soon lose track of the time spent playing games on FB instead of doing something constructive.

I thought this would be about sacades and actual speed reading, because the average user processed a FB image in like .2 seconds (.e.g that’s a beach selfie, next). Pls write abou that more than just “hey facebook has a lot of resources?” lovely blog though.
